A good flashcard tests one single decision

Overloaded cards are hard to grade: an answer can be partly right without telling you which part to rework. So split the lists, the mechanisms and the comparisons. One card asks for the definition; another tests the exception; a third applies the concept to an example.

The question also has to carry the context you need. "What is its role?" means nothing outside the chapter. "What is the role of an enzyme in a biochemical reaction?" allows clean retrieval and an unambiguous correction.

Frequency should follow difficulty. Cards you have got right several times can be spaced out; the ones you keep confusing come back sooner, with an explanation or an extra example. The goal is not to finish a pile, it is to reduce how many reviews you still need.

Adapting flashcards to the subject

In languages, test both directions and add a short sentence. In law or history, tie a definition to its conditions and to one example. In the sciences, ask for the unit, the meaning of a symbol or the next step of a mechanism, then redo full exercises away from the cards.

Flashcards suit long reasoning, full proofs and essays much less well. Use them to secure the building blocks, then put those blocks to work in an open quiz, a problem set or a mock exam.
